Seasonal Driveway and Walkway Snow Contracts in Kitchener

A seasonal contract is a route, not a promise to appear at a time. The driveway is on the list, the trigger depth is agreed, and every snowfall that reaches it gets cleared without a phone call.

The seasonal contract is the standard way snow gets handled in Kitchener's subdivisions, and it works because the economics are shared. A truck or tractor clearing twenty driveways on the same three crescents in Huron Park can do each one in a few minutes; the same machine driving across the city for one driveway cannot. That is why seasonal pricing is a flat fee for the winter rather than a per-visit charge, why it is set by driveway size, and why the routes are built from the contracts signed in the autumn. Late October is when that is happening.

What the contract covers

  • The driveway, cleared when snowfall reaches the agreed trigger depth, usually around 5 cm. Below that, a dusting is left or dealt with by the homeowner, and the contract says which.
  • The front walkway and steps, by shovel or blower, since a plow does not fit.
  • The windrow. City plows on Priority 3 streets can come through up to 24 hours after the snow stops and leave a bank of compacted snow across the apron. Returning to clear it is part of the service; a contract that does not say so is leaving you the heaviest part of the job.
  • Salting, if chosen, after clearing when conditions call for it rather than on every visit.
  • The public sidewalk along the frontage, if you want it included, which satisfies the City's 24-hour requirement without a second arrangement.

What it does not cover

A guaranteed time. During a storm the route runs continuously, and in a long event a driveway may be cleared, snowed back over, and cleared again. The order of the route is the order of the route. People who need to be out at a fixed early hour regardless of weather should say so at the quote stage, because sometimes the honest answer is a snowblower in the garage for that one morning a winter.

Where the snow goes

On a long Doon South driveway a season's snow is a serious volume. It gets stacked on the property, to one side, away from the sight line at the street and off the neighbour's side of the line. It is not pushed across the road, which the Highway Traffic Act prohibits, and it is not piled against the house where it melts into the foundation in March. On lots with little lawn beside the drive this is the main thing the site visit settles.

Driveway surfaces

Interlock and stamped concrete need a blade with a rubber or poly edge and a slightly raised cut; asphalt tolerates more. Fresh asphalt from this summer and new sod beside the drive both get noted so the operator knows. Marker stakes go in along the edges before the ground freezes, which is another reason to sign in the autumn.

Frequently asked questions

When does the season start and end?

Contracts generally run from the first plowable snowfall, often in November, to the end of March or mid-April depending on the year. The written agreement states the dates and what happens with an early or late storm outside them.

What if it is a mild winter with hardly any snow?

The seasonal price is a fixed fee for being on the route all winter, so a light year costs the same as a heavy one, in the same way a heavy year does not cost more. People who want their cost to track the snowfall should look at per-visit pricing instead.

Can you do my driveway before I leave for work?

Not as a promise. The route order and the storm decide the timing, and we will not write a time into a contract that a 20 cm overnight fall would make a lie. What we can do is place a driveway with a known early start sensibly within the route where that is practical.
